Peter's Grab Bag o' Links!

Wade through this page to find cool links you never knew existed! I have other outside links on my main page, and on my many other pages, but the links on this page are links that I like that don't necessarily fit into my other pages.

These links link to other links, which link to other links, and so on and so on... That's how the web works!

Stay tuned, because I plan to add more...

Humor Me

One of the funniest sites I have found on the Web is The Onion, a biweekly (or so) online magazine of satirical news. Go there and find out the hot new ghetto drugs the CIA plans to unveil for 1998, how Shi'ite terrorists outwitted the sherrif of Tanner County, and where the Supreme Court plans to road trip after its decision in "The U.S. Supreme Court v. Everyone Else (1997)".

Road Trips

Speaking of road trips, find out how to get where you're going using Yahoo maps. Before you go, you can find out what the highway signs in each state will look like. And if you're interested, you can read up on a bit of trivia on the highways in New York City and Long Island, I-95, or 3-digit Interstate highways. Why? Well, because it's there.

Urban Legends, Etc.

Are you sick of getting stories about the $250 Nieman-Marcus cookie recipe and the guy who wakes up in a bathtub full of ice missing his kidneys? Has anyone told you that birds explode when they eat rice and that some guy strapped a jet pack to his car and crashed it into a mountain? Well, don't be so gullible. None of that is true. Read the Urban Legends Reference Pages for more details. Not all urban legends are false, but you'll have to read through to find out which ones aren't.

The online version of the syndicated column The Straight Dope is also good for debunking such myths, as well as finding out the answers to such important questions as "Why are covered bridges covered?" and "Does throwing rice at weddings cause birds to explode?" And best of all, it's also quite funny.

For even more trivia, try the Useless Infomation page. ("Useless"? Nothing useless about Aspirin, Xerography, and how actress Hedy Lamarr patented the technology behind cellular phones. Some trivia buffs don't seem to have much self-esteem.)

Game Over, Man

Q*Bert picture Sure, today's video games have better graphics, but almost none of them match the imagination and fun of classic games of ten, fifteen, or even twenty years ago. Who needs another kickboxing or auto racing game? Give me good old Q*Bert any day.

Read about the good old days of video games as brought to you by the National Coin-Op and Video Game Museum, the Video Arcade Preservation Society, or the Classic Video Games Nexus.

Music and Radio

Radio stations aren't just for listening anymore. Find your favorites' web sites on the Yahoo Radio Station List.

Chances are you can find a web site devoted to your favorite act, too, on the Yahoo Music Artists Lists or the Ultimate Band List.

And if you're listening to your favorite song by your favorite band on your favorite radio station, and you have no idea what is being sung, you can probably find the right lyrics on the Internet Lyrics Server.

When you want to buy the CD, join Columbia House. Better yet, join through me! You'll still get the same introductory deal (10 CD's for a penny or something like that), but I'll also get 5 free CD's. So you can get cheap music and be nice at the same time. (Yes, it is cheaper than record stores, but only if you wait for the specials and buy two or more at a time).

Speaking of lyrics, here are the lyrics (and pictures and sounds) to all of the episodes of our favorite schoolhouse, Schoolhouse Rock! Or you can get them in one big text file, suitable for downloading.

What's On The Boob Tube

Here's information on some great animated shows with their own Web sites: The Simpsons and The Critic. (A pox on Fox for prematurely cancelling the latter).

By the way - here are scripts to my all-time favorite Simpsons episodes (coincidentally enough, they're all from Season Six):

A bit more kid-oriented, but still quite good, are Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid!, and The Tick. The first three are on Kids' WB. And here are even more TV cartoon web sites!

Did I mention Schoolhouse Rock!?

TV Nation is also a great, funny show, but it's on Fox, and like most great, funny shows on Fox (with the notable exception of The Simpsons), it probably won't be renewed.

Other current TV comedies I enjoy (and I hope you do, too) include (in no particular order) MST3K, Frasier, Wings, NewsRadio, The Nanny, Seinfeld, and probably more, but that's enough for now.

Find your other favorite TV shows on the Internet TV Show List.

You can even download your favorite TV theme songs (just the songs - no lyrics) from the aptly named WWW TV Themes Home Page.

And find out who to complain to when your favorite show is cancelled on the following connected networks: NBC, CBS, Fox, UPN (unofficial site), WB, PBS, Comedy Central, and MTV.

The Great White Way

When I was stuck in Florida, I didn't get to Broadway much. But thanks to the Web, I could keep up to date about what's playing on Broadway, and even read issues of Playbill when I had the chance.

I'm not a huge movie fan, but...

The Internet Movie Database has tons of information on your favorite movies, actors, actresses, and key grips. If you want to know what to *really* think about said movies, my friend Doug reviews movies as a hobby, and does it well enough that he's been mentioned in Entertainment Weekly!

You just knew you could find the script to Monty Python and the Holy Grail somwhere on the web, didn't you?

The Best of the Best (Presumably)

Find out who is up for or who has won Emmys, Oscars, Grammys, and Tonys.

Other entertainment awards include the CableACE (Best New Cable Program: Old "Starsky and Hutch"'s!), the Obies and the Clios (don't have the Web sites for them, yet).

Miscellaneous miscellany

Religion: Fellow Catholics or curious non-Catholics can find index of Catholic Resources on the Net, including a complete list of Popes with biographical information.

Rook: If you want a fun four-player card game that's more interesting than hearts or spades but less complicated than bridge, read what I have to say on Rook!

Comics: You've got to like Dilbert. The comic strip Robotman is also worthwhile.

Software: Download lots of Macintosh Software from the Hyperactive archive at MIT.

Computer Games: Civilization and SimCity 2000 are the best and most addictive out there.

Politics: Here are Libertarian and and Republican web sites. I'm sure there might be other political persuasions out there, but I can't think of them at this moment.

News: Keep abreast of the current news from Reuters Online. Heh-heh. I wrote "abreast".

Wheels: I used to drive a 1985 Volvo 740 GLE, but it died in March 1996 with almost 186,000 miles on it. I liked my car. I'll miss it.

Background: Much of the time, background wallpaper slows things down and is often too distracting for its own good. Setting background colors instead is a faster and space-free way to spice up that page.

Languages: Do something productive and learn a new language via the Web. Or just browse translating dictionaries. Lots of language resources are available.
