Act I: They Meet
I met Sue Berube at Princeton way back in September 1990. We
were both in the Band, it was a rainy home football game, and she was (and
still is) too cute for words, even in a soggy orange-and-black plaid wool
jacket. Although she caused me to need a tetanus shot at the infirmary
that day, I quickly fell in love.
Tetanus shot? Really?
Really. I'll let you know how if you want.
Well, the rest of it sounds sweet.
Well, she had a boyfriend from home, but through sheer persistence on my
part, and a well-timed intersession break at the end of January, we
started dating in February of 1991. I knew I was going to marry her even
before we started going out and I told her so. And it turns out I was right!
And you've been together ever since, right?
I graduated that June
and went off to grad school. We have been together ever since, in one
sense, but until September of 1996, it had been a long-distance
relationship (I've been in Massachusetts, New York, and Florida, while
she's been in New Jersey, Maine, and Colorado), which wasn't any fun, but
we managed. We got engaged in April of 1994, and of course married in July
of 1996. What can we say? We're slow.
